The Swami

and

The Married Woman

By Gary and Radha Bello

with Jeremy Barr

Gary “Gopal” Bello met Donna “Radha” Phelps at a silent yoga retreat in 1976.  He was a swami, she was a married woman, and one year later they exchanged these ill-suited vows for another one: to support one another and serve humanity.  The Swami and the Married Woman is a dual memoir of the years leading up to their marriage, coupled with stories from their most recent years that demonstrate how they have fulfilled the vow they made on their wedding day.  Their commitment to one another has led them to understand spirituality not as a path to Enlightenment, but rather as the embracing of life as a series of "Enlightening Moments."

The first seven years, 1970-1977, chronicle Gary and Donna's introduction to yoga and meditation.  Gary's path begins with his court-martial and subsequent introduction to Swami Satchidananda, spiritual leader and counter-cultural icon.  Donna's story starts in Marrakech, where a chance encounter on her honeymoon introduces her to Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi.  Their lives develop in parallel, encountering joy, disillusionment, and culminating with their marriage.

The second seven years, 2003-2010, focus on their life today.  After thirty-three years of marriage and forty years of practicing yoga and meditation, these chapters demonstrate how Gary and Radha successfully integrate past lessons and share them with others.  Through a combination of Eastern philosophy, Western psychology, and body-centered therapies, they offer their students and clients a synthesis of past and present, East and West, insight and experience.

The final section of The Swami and the Married Woman is a study guide, briefly exploring the Enlightening Moments from the conclusion of each chapter.  Readers are given not only points to ponder, but also tools to utilize, assisting them on their own paths to happiness and freedom.  These mini-lessons tie in to Gary and Radha's series of Enlightening Moments workshops and seminars, which are offered throughout the United States and Canada.
